Leica IIIa (Model G)
A 35mm LTM rangefinder camera and the first Leica model to reach a 1/1000s shutter speed.
The Leica IIIa (Model G) was introduced in 1935 and was the first Leica to offer a 1/1000s shutter speed. It is a classic Barnack-style LTM camera, featuring a compact screw-mount design and separate windows for composition and focusing. It remains a popular choice for those wanting the traditional Leica experience in a very portable form factor.
When assessing a IIIa, we check for 'shutter bounce' or uneven exposures at the 1/1000s setting. The rangefinder is tested for accuracy and clarity, as the silvering on the prism can deteriorate with age. We also inspect the film advance for smoothness and ensure the rewind release lever engages correctly. The condition of the vulcanite body covering is also noted, as it can become brittle and chip.
