Leica IIIf
A classic 35mm L39 screw-mount rangefinder camera featuring mechanical shutter speeds and flash synchronisation.
The Leica IIIf is a classic 35mm rangefinder camera featuring a screw-mount (L39) system. Introduced in 1950, it incorporates a built-in flash synchronisation dial, a range of shutter speeds from 1 second to 1/1000th, and a self-timer on later 'Red Dial' versions. It is highly regarded for its compact dimensions, precision engineering, and all-mechanical operation, making it an enduring choice for traditional street photography.
When purchasing a used IIIf, the clarity of the rangefinder patch and the accuracy of the slow shutter speeds are primary concerns. SDS checks for pinholes in the shutter curtains and ensures the film advance is smooth. Common wear includes ‘brassing’ on the chrome finish and hazy viewfinders. We also verify that the flash sync dial rotates correctly and the vulcanite body covering remains intact and supple.
