Model Overview

Pentax A3

The first Pentax 35mm SLR with a built-in motor drive, offering programmed autoexposure and K-mount compatibility.

The Pentax A3 (known as the A3000 in some markets) was the first Pentax SLR to feature a built-in motor drive for automatic film loading and advancing. It offers programmed autoexposure and a dedicated settings for flash photography, though it lacks a manual shutter speed dial. It uses the K-mount, specifically supporting 'A' series lenses to enable full programme mode, while remaining compatible with older manual K-mount glass in aperture-priority or stopped-down modes. Potential buyers should focus on the battery compartment and the motor drive. The A3 relies heavily on electronic power; any corrosion from AA batteries can cause intermittent power failures. SDS tests the film advance motor and ensures the DX coding system correctly identifies film speeds. The light seals on this model are typically foam-based and may require replacement if they have become compressed or tacky.
