The Canon EF, introduced in 1973, is a manual focus 35mm SLR known as the 'Black Beauty' due to its distinct black finish. It was notable for being one of the first cameras to feature a sophisticated silicon photocell for metering and a hybrid shutter that operates electronically at slow speeds and mechanically at high speeds. It uses the Canon FD lens mount and offers shutter-priority autoexposure. When purchasing a used Canon EF, the shutter speed accuracy at low speeds is a primary concern, as this relies on aging electronic components. The light meter should be checked for linearity, and the battery compartment inspected for corrosion from old mercury cells.
