Canon FTb
A rugged, mechanical 35mm SLR camera featuring the Canon FD mount and Quick Load film system.
The Canon FTb is a robust, all-mechanical 35mm SLR utilizing the Canon FD lens mount. Launched in 1971, it was designed as a mid-range alternative to the professional F-1, sharing much of its durability and the 12% spot metering system. It operates without a battery, requiring power only for the light meter. The camera features a QL (Quick Load) system, making film loading significantly faster and more reliable than many contemporaries.
When assessing an FTb, the accuracy of the slow shutter speeds is a priority, as these can become sluggish over time. SDS checks the light meter for responsiveness and accuracy, though users should note it was originally designed for 625-type mercury cells. We also inspect the foam damper for the mirror, which often degrades into a sticky residue, and ensure the QL mechanism functions without snagging the film leader.
