Canon AL-1
A 35mm SLR film camera featuring a unique electronic focus-assist system and FD mount.
The Canon AL-1 is a 35mm SLR film camera introduced in 1982, notable for its 'Quick Focus' electronic focus-assist system. Using the FD lens mount, it provides aperture-priority autoexposure and manual modes. The focus-assist uses a CCD sensor to indicate via LEDs in the viewfinder when the subject is in focus, aiding manual focusing.
The most common issue with the AL-1 is the battery door, which is prone to breaking or losing its latching ability; many examples now require external reinforcement. Check the viewfinder for silvering or dust and ensure the focus-assist LEDs are functioning. SDS inspects the light seals, shutter speeds for accuracy, and the integrity of the battery housing.
