The Pentax KM is a 35mm SLR that serves as a direct successor to the Spotmatic F, updated with the K-mount lens system. It is a fully mechanical camera, requiring a battery only for the integrated TTL light meter. It features a shutter speed range of 1 to 1/1000 second plus Bulb, and a depth-of-field preview lever. Its robust, all-metal construction makes it a popular choice for students and traditionalists.
Look for accuracy in the mechanical shutter speeds, particularly at the slower end (1 second to 1/15th). The light meter is a common failure point; it should be tested for linearity across different light levels. We check the condition of the mirror foam and light seals, and ensure the K-mount flange is secure and free from warping. Internal prisms may occasionally show desilvering or 'foam rot'.
