Nikon F2 Photomic A
A professional mechanical 35mm SLR updated with the DP-11 finder for AI lens compatibility.
The Nikon F2 Photomic A (DP-11) is a variation of the venerable F2 chassis designed for compatibility with AI (Aperture Indexing) lenses. Introduced in 1977, the DP-11 finder allows for full-aperture metering without the need to manually 'index' the lens using the traditional coupling prong. This makes it a highly practical choice for photographers who own a mix of AI and later manual focus Nikkor lenses. The camera retains the F2's legendary mechanical reliability and 1/2000s top shutter speed.
When buying a used F2A, the condition of the AI coupling ring on the finder is vital; it should move freely and return under spring tension. SDS checks the DP-11 meter for accuracy and stability, as well as the mechanical health of the shutter curtains. We also look for common F2 issues such as worn film rails or degraded internal light-trap foam. The viewfinder should be clear of fungus or significant dust, and the battery compartment must be free of electrolytic leakage.
