Leica M Monochrom (Typ 246)
A 24-megapixel full-frame digital rangefinder featuring a dedicated monochrome CMOS sensor for black and white photography.
The Leica M Monochrom (Typ 246) is a digital rangefinder equipped with a 24-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor devoid of a colour filter array. By omitting the Bayer pattern, the sensor captures more light and provides higher native sharpness and tonality in black and white images. This model introduced a 3-inch sapphire crystal LCD, Live View, and 1080p video recording to the monochrome line, while maintaining the traditional manual focus rangefinder experience.
When purchasing a used Typ 246, the sensor should be inspected for delamination or corrosion, though this model is less prone to the issues seen in the earlier M9-based Monochrom. SDS checks the rangefinder alignment at infinity and close-focus, ensures the rear screen is free from impact damage, and verifies the functionality of the brass top and bottom plates. Typical wear is often seen as 'brassing' on the edges of the black chrome finish.
