A unique catadioptric (mirror) lens for the Sony A-mount, this 500mm optic is famously the only production reflex lens to feature autofocus. It is exceptionally compact and lightweight for its focal length, making it handheld-capable for wildlife and sports photography. It produces the characteristic 'doughnut' bokeh inherent to mirror designs and has a fixed f/8 aperture.
The autofocus relies on the camera's internal motor, so we check the drive screw for wear. As a mirror lens, internal alignment is critical; we check for any signs of 'milking' or degradation of the reflective surfaces. We also ensure the drop-in filter holder is present and that the glass is free from fungus, which can be difficult to clean in these complex internal structures.
