Schneider-Kreuznach Symmar-S 300mm f/5.6 - Large Format
Schneider-Kreuznach Symmar-S 300mm f/5.6 is a large-format prime lens with a 300mm focal length and a fast f/5.6 maximum aperture. It sits in Schneider’s well-regarded Symmar-S line, intended for bellows cameras and studio or field view cameras rather than modern interchangeable lens mounts. The lens is valued for its sharpness, coverage and even rendering, making it a practical choice for landscapes, architecture and product work on 4x5 and larger formats, depending on the format and movements required. As a large-format lens it is typically used with a Copal-style leaf shutter on a lens board, so handling is very different from SLR or mirrorless lenses: setup is slower, but movements and control are excellent. Exact weight varies by shutter and mounting version, so it is best checked against the individual item being sold. On the used market, inspect the shutter for accurate speeds and clean blades, the glass for haze, fungus, separation or cleaning marks, and the lens board or shutter mount for damage or play. Also confirm aperture blade operation and that the engraved serial and aperture markings are legible.
