Schneider-Kreuznach Symmar 240mm f/5.6 - Large Format
Schneider-Kreuznach Symmar 240mm f/5.6 is a large format prime lens with a classic normal-telephoto viewpoint for view cameras. It is part of Schneider's well-regarded Symmar family, designed for large format work where image circle, sharpness and movements matter more than autofocus or electronic features. In use it is a manual lens with a Copal-style shutter on many examples, intended for controlled studio, landscape and architectural photography on 4x5 inch and larger formats depending on the exact version and coverage requirements. The 240mm focal length gives a more compressed perspective than a standard lens, making it useful for portraits and detailed outdoor scenes while still allowing camera movements where the lens coverage permits. Build quality is typically solid and mechanical, but condition varies greatly because these lenses often live in shutters, boards and bellows systems that may have seen decades of use. When buying used, check the shutter speeds, aperture blades, front and rear elements for haze, fungus, separation or cleaning marks, and make sure any lens board or shutter mounting is intact and free from play.
