The Nikon Reflex-Nikkor 500mm f/8 is a compact super-telephoto lens utilising a catadioptric (mirror) design. This construction allows for a significantly shorter and lighter barrel compared to traditional refractive lenses of the same focal length. It is characterised by its fixed f/8 aperture and 'doughnut-shaped' bokeh in out-of-focus highlights. The lens is capable of focusing down to 1.5 metres, offering a respectable macro reproduction ratio for a telephoto. Inspect the rear-mounted filters, as these are part of the optical design and should be present. The internal mirrors can occasionally suffer from desilvering or 'fungus' which significantly impacts contrast; SDS performs thorough internal inspections for these defects. The manual focus ring should operate smoothly, as precise focusing is critical given the narrow depth of field and fixed aperture.
