The Nikkor 400mm f/5.6 IF-ED Ai-S is a manual-focus super-telephoto lens known for its compact size relative to its focal length. It utilizes Internal Focusing (IF) for faster handling and Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass to minimise chromatic aberration. The lens features a built-in telescoping hood and a rotating tripod collar. Its relatively modest f/5.6 aperture allows for a much lighter construction than the f/2.8 or f/4 alternatives, making it suitable for handheld wildlife photography.
