Canon FX
A robust, fully mechanical 35mm SLR featuring an external CdS light meter and the Canon FL breech-lock lens mount.
The Canon FX, introduced in 1964, is a robust 35mm SLR and the first to feature a built-in light meter using a CdS photocell. It utilises the Canon R or FL breech-lock mount and offers a fully mechanical focal-plane shutter with speeds up to 1/1000th of a second. The camera is known for its heavy all-metal construction and reliable manual operation, making it a dependable choice for students and traditional film enthusiasts.
When purchasing a used FX, the primary concern is the light meter, which was designed for 1.35v mercury batteries; modern zinc-air or alkaline alternatives may require voltage adjustment for accuracy. SDS checks the external meter window for clarity and ensures the needle reacts correctly to light. The shutter speeds are tested for accuracy, particularly at the lower end, and the film advance mechanism is inspected for smooth operation. Light seals typically require replacement due to age.
