The EF 200mm f/1.8L USM is a legendary prime lens often referred to as the 'Eye of Sauron' due to its massive front element and exceptional light-gathering capabilities. It remains one of the fastest lenses in its focal length class, providing distinctive background separation and low-light performance. It uses a focus-by-wire system driven by a large ultrasonic motor, making it a specialist tool for indoor sports and portraiture. As this lens is no longer serviced by the manufacturer, the condition of the focus motor is critical; SDS verifies that the focus-by-wire system responds correctly in both AF and manual modes. The lens is heavy, so we inspect the tripod foot and mounting plate for fatigue. Due to the age of the electronics, we check for any error codes when stopped down. Internal glass is checked for haze, particularly given the large number of elements.
