Jupiter Jupiter-9 85mm f/2 - M42
Jupiter-9 85mm f/2 is a Soviet M42 portrait prime with a classic Sonnar-style look. It is a fully manual lens with no autofocus or stabilisation, and on full-frame it gives the traditional short-telephoto perspective that suits head-and-shoulders portraits, detail work and general use on adapted digital bodies. The optics are known for a smooth rendering, with a gentle transition from sharp focus to blur and a characterful, slightly vintage contrast that many users prize over clinically modern lenses. Handling is straightforward rather than refined: the all-metal build feels solid, but copy-to-copy variation is part of the lens’s history, so performance can differ depending on condition and version. The 49 mm filter thread and 1 m minimum focus distance are typical of this model, and the lens is best suited to photographers who are comfortable focusing manually and working at moderate distances. On the used market, check that the focus helicoid turns smoothly, the aperture blades are clean and snappy, and the glass is free from haze, fungus, separation and excessive cleaning marks; also inspect mount wear and any play from adapter use.
