The Tamron SP AF 180mm f/3.5 Macro Di LD (IF) is a dedicated telephoto macro lens providing a 1:1 reproduction ratio. It offers a significant working distance, making it useful for photographing insects and other skittish subjects without disturbing them. The Internal Focusing (IF) design ensures the lens length does not change during use. It features Low Dispersion (LD) glass to reduce colour fringing and is known for producing high-contrast images with pleasing background blur. Used examples should be checked for the operation of the Filter Effect Control (FEC) ring, which allows the rotation of a polarising filter with the hood attached. The autofocus is relatively slow compared to modern USD motors, but should be consistent; however, the manual focus ring is the primary concern for macro work and must be perfectly smooth. SDS inspects the tripod collar for stability and checks the internal optics for fungus, which can occasionally affect older telephoto lenses. The gold-band design is prone to minor cosmetic wear.
