Ricoh RW-1

The Ricoh RW-1 is a ruggedized 35mm film camera, often referred to as 'Wide Pan' due to its 28mm wide-angle lens. It is designed to be weather-resistant and shock-resistant, making it suitable for outdoor use and harsher environments. It features a large, bright viewfinder and simplified controls for operation while wearing gloves. The wide 28mm focal length is particularly useful for landscape and documentary photography. When inspecting an RW-1, the rubber seals around the battery and film compartments are critical; SDS checks these for perishing or cracking to ensure the weather resistance remains intact. The external casing often shows scuffs due to its intended use, but the lens should remain clear of scratches. The film advance motor should be tested under load to ensure it maintains consistent frame spacing.
