Ricoh Auto Half
A vintage half-frame 35mm camera featuring a clockwork film advance and selenium meter.
The Ricoh Auto Half is a classic half-frame 35mm camera, first introduced in the 1960s. It is famous for its clockwork spring-drive motor, which automatically advances the film after each shot, and its selenium cell light meter that enables shutter-priority auto-exposure without batteries. By using a half-frame format, it allows for 72 exposures on a standard 36-exposure roll. Its compact, boxy design and fixed-focus 25mm f/2.8 lens make it a cult favourite for street photography.
When buying a used Auto Half, the most critical check is the selenium meter; if it has failed, the auto-exposure will not function. The spring-drive mechanism should be wound to ensure it advances the film correctly without slipping. SDS checks the aperture blades for oil and ensures the shutter fires at both the 'Auto' and 'Flash' settings. We also inspect the viewfinder for clarity and replace the light seals, which are frequently degraded on these vintage models.
