The Pentax Spotmatic F (SPII F) is the final evolution of the original Spotmatic series, using the M42 screw mount. Its primary advancement is the support for open-aperture metering when used with SMC Takumar lenses, though it remains backwards compatible with older M42 glass via stopped-down metering. The camera is known for its robust all-metal construction and smooth mechanical operation.
When purchasing a Spotmatic F, the battery compartment should be checked for corrosion; fortunately, the meter circuit is bridge-balanced and handles modern 1.5v silver oxide batteries well. SDS checks that the 'Super-Multi-Coated' linkage is functioning and that the shutter curtains are light-tight and travel at the correct speeds. Common issues include 'lazy' mirrors that fail to return instantly after exposure.
