Nikon AF-S Nikkor 300mm f/4E PF ED VR
Nikon AF-S Nikkor 300mm f/4E PF ED VR is a compact full-frame telephoto prime with 300mm reach and a fast f/4 aperture. The PF Fresnel element is the key to its unusually small size and low weight for this focal length, while ED glass helps control colour fringing and Nikon’s VR stabilisation makes handheld shooting far more practical than on older 300mm f/4 designs. The E-type electronic diaphragm gives consistent exposure control, and AF-S autofocus is generally quick and quiet, making it a strong choice for wildlife, field sports and compressed portrait work. Image quality is widely regarded as very good across most of the frame, with strong sharpness and contrast, though careful handling is worthwhile because PF lenses can show some sensitivity to out-of-focus artefacts in high-contrast scenes. Compared with heavier 300mm alternatives, this model is valued for portability rather than absolute toughness, but it still has a weather-sealed mount and a solid pro-level feel. On the used market, check the VR system, autofocus accuracy, aperture operation, front and rear elements for haze or fungus, and the mount and tripod foot for wear.
