Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED

Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED is an APS-C zoom lens with a broad walkaround range. As a DX lens it gives a useful 27-202.5mm equivalent field of view on Nikon crop bodies, making it a versatile one-lens option for travel, general family use and hobby photography. The AF-S motor provides autofocus on compatible Nikon F-mount DSLRs, while internal focusing keeps the barrel from extending during focus. Image quality is respectable in the centre but varies with focal length and aperture, with the usual compromises of an older, high-ratio kit zoom: more distortion and softness at the ends of the range, and less sparkle than newer premium DX zooms. The lens is relatively light and compact for its reach, so it balances well on entry-level and mid-range Nikon DSLRs. It does not include vibration reduction or weather sealing, so low-light hand-holding and harsh conditions rely on the camera and the user rather than the lens itself. When buying used, check that autofocus is smooth and quiet, the zoom ring moves evenly, the aperture blades stop down properly, and the front and rear elements are free from haze, fungus, separation and excessive dust, with no play or wear at the mount.
