Nikon AF Nikkor 28-85mm f/3.5-4.5
Nikon AF Nikkor 28-85mm f/3.5-4.5 is a Nikon F-mount zoom lens with a versatile mid-range focal span. Introduced in the mid-1980s, it was aimed at photographers who wanted one practical walk-around lens covering moderate wide-angle to short telephoto without the bulk of a constant-aperture pro zoom. On film bodies it offers a useful everyday range for travel, street and general family use, and on later Nikon DSLRs it can be mounted on many F-mount cameras, although behaviour depends on the body. The design is from the early autofocus era, so autofocus speed and feel are modest by modern standards and optical performance is best stopped down for improved edge consistency. Handling is straightforward, with a relatively compact build for its class and a straightforward zoom range that made it a common kit-style upgrade in its day. Used examples are now mainly bought for value and compatibility rather than cutting-edge sharpness. Check for smooth zoom and focus action, oil or haze on the glass, fungus, aperture blade cleanliness, excessive wear to the mount and signs of impact or loose internal elements.
